Third North Anna nuclear reactor passes environmental review
Virginia’s nuclear renaissance passed a major benchmark this week as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) completed its environmental impact review of a proposed third reactor at the North Anna Power Station in Louisa County.
The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star reports that the NRC concluded that Dominion’s proposed new reactor would not cause any adverse environmental impact.
The North Anna 3 reactor is a part of a resurgence of clean and safe nuclear energy sweeping across the country that will help America meet rising energy demand, spur economic development and reduce our dependence on foreign energy. North Anna 3 will generate enough electricity to power 375,000 homes and will create 750 new jobs in Central Virginia.
The new reactor will have to clear two more hurdles before the project may begin. The NRC says it will have to conduct a final safety evaluation and review of the reactor’s design before it issues a license for the project next year.
