Surry and Dendron approve largest coal power plant in Virginia

Last week, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative secured final approval from the Surry County Board of Supervisors and the Dendron Town Council to build its’ coal-fired Cypress Creek Power Plant.  The Virginian-Pilot reported on the votes in Surry and Dendron.

Upon completion, the 1,500-megawatt plant will be the largest coal-fired power plant in Virginia and will provide electricity to approximately 375,000 homes.  ODEC expects the plant to be completed and generating power in 2017.

ODEC says that the plant will create as many as 3,000 new jobs during the construction phase and more than 200 during operational phase.
