Highland County wind project gets boost from SCC
In the last week of January, a State Corporation Commission (SCC) examiner recommended dismissal of a complaint by the Department of Historical Resources against a proposed wind farm in Highland County reports the Roanoke Times. The Department filed a complaint in August 2009, accusing Highland New Wind Development of not consulting with the Department over how to minimize the impact on view-sheds of the nearby Camp Alleghany Battlefield.
The proposed wind farm, which is supposed to begin construction this spring, will consist of 19 turbines reaching 400 feet tall that will likely produce enough electricity to power 12,000 homes.
After examining the issue, the SCC examiner concluded that Highland New Wind had satisfactorally consulted with the Department and with the Highland County Board of Supervisors to address view-shed and historic preservation issues.
Because the examiner’s recommendation will most likely be adopted by the full SCC, the project appears ready to launch in the coming months without further obstacle or delay.
